Art Gallery of Ontario
Located in the heart of downtown Toronto, the Art Gallery of Ontario (AGO) is a landmark institution occupying an expansive 45,000 m² (approx. 480,000 sq ft) of physical space, making it one of the largest art museums in North America. Established in 1900 (originally as the Art Museum of Toronto) and renamed the AGO in 1966, the gallery’s evolution mirrors the city’s own cultural growth.
With a permanent collection that grows beyond 120,000 artworks — from Canadian and Indigenous artists to European masters and contemporary visionaries — the AGO offers visitors a broad and compelling journey through art’s many expressions. Its architectural presence alone — including the iconic 2008 redesign by famed architect Frank Gehry — invites people in, while the galleries themselves invite deeper exploration and reflection.
Art has a way of mirroring our inner world — it opens pathways to explore emotion, memory, and imagination, and invites us into the deeper landscapes of human experience.
